The following steps are still valid after it has been decided on how to develop the discussion paper further:
Plan and find out how the WG can exploit its liaisons with international standardization bodies like the Unicode Consortium, ISO and OGC to accomplish the task → will be tackled within Strategy 2
Possibly in cooperation with the liaisons, compile a structured and annotated list on standards with relevance to GN data exchange, dissemination and integration and provide links to relevant sources on their GN data related properties
Invite countries, organizations and UNGEGN members to provide thoughts, examples as well as data providers’ and users’ experiences on the application of the standards
Evaluate and assess exchange standards for geographical names information and for web services (gazetteer, feature and mapping) for the provision of geographical names information
(comprising the review of Part II of the UNGEGN Technical Reference Manual)

Progress 26.04.2022
A discussion paper "On geographical names data modelling and transfer related standards, manuals, or guidelines" has been prepared. The objective of this document/compilation related to subtask 1-i-2 is stated as follows: “With the following document members of UNGEGN’s Working Group on Geographical Names data Management (WG GNDM) have compiled ideas for geographical names data modelling and transfer related standards, manuals, or guidelines. The compilation shall contribute and be the rationale for a paper to be submitted to the next UNGEGN session and become the rationale for an updated structure for ‘Part two. Toponymic data transfer standards and formats’ of UNGEGN’s ‘Technical Reference Manual for the National Standardization of Geographical Names (2007)’. The outcome and findings might be published within UNGEGN’s webpage or its wiki structure. [Review and update in progress by WG GNDM (status: 03/2022)]”
Results of the Meeting of the Task Team on 17-11-2021:
Create a "guide" to assist countries/institutions to standardize geographical names
"Guide" can be drafted within the wiki and then shiftedf to the UNGEGN website
"Guide" will include aspects on standards for the creation of a data model, the data processing as well as the data dissemination / publication (e.g. web services)
