Data only in Hungarian, some in minority languages.

A digital geographical name database is available in Hungary. The version that covers the whole country is equivalent to maps at a scale of about 1:50,000 in terms of the density and accuracy of the name data.

Unfortunately, it is not free. Data requests can be made via a web interface, but so far, we have always been allowed to give our data freely in framework of an international cooperation.

The data of the Gazetteer of Hungary are considered as national basic data.  The distribution of these is regulated by ministerial decrees. Free access was proposed on several occasions.

ItaliyYes

More precisely, in Italy, there are two levels of treatment of geographical names: national and regional.

At the national level, the task is carried out by the Italian Geographic Military Institute (IGMI) while at the regional level the task is carried out by the regions and the autonomous provinces of Trento and Bolzano-Bozen.

No. The national toponymy database created by IGMI is for sale.

At the regional and provincial scale toponyms are currently available free of charge only for some Italian territories.

IGMI and Veneto Region are currently working to create regional gazetteers to be merged into the IGMI database. This project will hopefully serve as a model to be applied nationally to all Italian regions.

For the national level, it is necessary to send a purchase request to the IGMI at the following link: https://www.igmi.org/it/descrizione-prodotti/cartografia-digitale/database-toponomastica

For the Autonomous Region of Valle d'Aosta - Vallée d'Aoste, the official toponymy is available at the following link: https://www.regione.vda.it/enti_locali/cartella_f.asp?pk_cartelle=442

For the Liguria Region the entire toponymic dataset is available at the following link: https://srvcarto.regione.liguria.it/geoservices/apps/viewer/pages/apps/download/index.html?id=2238

For the Autonomous Province of Trento, the Trentino Toponymy Dictionary is available at the following link:

https://www.cultura.trentino.it/portal/server.pt/community/dizionario_toponomastico_trentino

A toponymic dataset was created for the Autonomous Province of Bolzano - Bozen, available in shapefile and PDF formats. You can download it at the following link:

https://www.provincia.bz.it/natura-ambiente/natura-territorio/cartografia/kartographisches-namengut-der-landesverwaltung.asp

For the Tuscany Region, the regional gazetteer is available at the following link: http://www502.regione.toscana.it/geoscopio/cartoteca.html

The data is accessible in the following languages:

- Italian for the national level;

- Italian and French for the Autonomous Region of Valle d’Aosta - Vallée d’Aoste;

- Italian, English and German for the Autonomous Province of Trento;

- Italian and German for the Autonomous Province of Bolzano - Bozen;

- Italian for the Tuscany Region.

The sale of the toponymy database by the IGMI is currently established by administrative provisions.

SpainYesYes

Spain, through the National Geographic Institute (IGN), provides this data with the Basic Geographic Gazetteer of Spain, in two different ways. Both free.

On the one hand, data can be downloaded via the download service (WFS) according to INSPIRE specifications. The data model adopted for this service is also set by INSPIRE (https://inspire.ec.europa.eu/id/document/tg/gn) so it is fully interoperable. The link to access this service is: https://www.ign.es/wfs-inspire/ngbe

On the other hand, the IGN also makes available to all users the download of the Basic Geographic gazetteer of Spain as a file in Access database format or as a file in *.csv format (in this case with an own data model) through the CNIG Download Center at this link: http://centrodedescargas.cnig.es/CentroDescargas/locale?request_locale=en (then accessing the Basic Geographic Nomenclature of Spain section).
